Contemporary French Literature

Not offered in 2009-2010; offered in alternate years)

Description:

Characterized by experimentation and by the crisis of representation, French literature of the 20th and 21st centuries has undergone numerous transformations in form, content, and generic boundaries. This course studies these literary movements, trends, and transgressions in various different genres: poetry, prose, and theatre. Movements such as surrealism, Dada, Oulipo, the theatre of the absurd, existentialism, the nouveau roman, and postmodernism will be examined. The course will include an analysis of selected works by authors such as Apollinaire, Proust, Aragon, Gide, Sartre, Yourcenar, Perec, Duras, Rochefort, Robbe-Grillet, Butor, Simon, Redonnet, Bon, or Koltès, depending upon the instructor's preference.
