Introduction to Quebec Literature and Culture

Description:

A study of various aspects of Québec culture such as literature, cinema, art and language, and their role in the evolution of a distinct Québec society. The course will also familiarize students with important socio-historical events in the development of Québec society, in order to facilitate a better understanding and appreciation of Québec literature. Special attention will be given to techniques of analysis and literary criticism as applied to narrative and poetic texts. As a supplement to the reading material, a feature film will be presented in class.

Assignments and evaluation: Take-home exam (15%); Textual analysis 2 (35%); Test 1 (15%); Test 2 (25%); Overall assessment (10%).

The Department takes into account the quality of students' French as one of the criteria in the evaluation of assignments and examinations. A minimum of 20% of the grade will be allocated to this aspect of written assignments.

Prerequisite: FSL 221Y1 or, upon first FRE/FSL enrolment, equivalent as determined by the French Placement Test.
