Teaching French as a Second Language


This course will provide an introduction to the communicative approach in recent methods and pedagogical materials published in France and in Canada. Emphasis will be put on the various interpretations of the communicative approach in teaching FSL, with reference to theoretical issues and historical background. To better understand the implications of the communicative approach in teaching FSL, we will examine the learner’s style (attitude, motivations, learning patterns) as well as the acquisition of skills in grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Assignments and evaluation:

In-class Test (30%); Take-home Assignment: FSL Learner Profile and Pedagogical Research Dossier (30%); In-class Final Test (25%); Overall Assessment, In-class Quiz, Attendance (15%).

The Department takes into account the quality of students' French as one of the criteria in the evaluation of assignments and examinations. A minimum of 20% of the grade will be allocated to this aspect of written assignments.
