French Phonology and Phonetics

Description:
A phonetic and phonological study of the sound system of French as spoken by native and non-native speakers. Both segmental (allophonic variation, cluster simplification, assimilation/coarticulation) and prosodic phenomena (liaison, stress) will be investigated. Students will receive training in acoustic analysis as well as formal phonological analysis.

Assignments and evaluation:
Tests and quizzes (45%); assignments (45%); participation (10%).
The Department takes into account the quality of students' French as one of the criteria in the evaluation of assignments and examinations. A minimum of 20% of the grade will be allocated to this aspect of written assignments.
